How Omega 3 Helps Balance Sugar Levels

UCLA assistant professor of integrative biology and physiology Xia Yang says that DHA is capable of making genetic changes that transform it back to normal. While DHA is naturally found in the brain cells of humans, it is not present in large amounts. Hence, an increase in DHA levels may help in fighting certain diseases.
What’s more, UCLA professor of neurosurgery Fernando Gomez-Pinilla adds that both the brain and body lack the necessary materials to synthesize DHA. That’s why DHA is essential in our diets. It can be found in walnuts, flaxseed, wild salmon, fruits and vegetables.

In general, omega 3’s are polyunsaturated fatty acids that have blood pressure lowering effects, brain boosting benefit and depression fighting capability. Vegan sources of omega 3 fatty acids are mostly made up of Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA) whereas those present in fish and fish oils are DHA and EPA (Eicosapentanoic acid).
Vegans may still get their daily dose of omega 3s from plant sources, namely chia and flaxseeds. The body is then capable of converting ALA to DHA and EPA. However, the presence of disease, smoking, high trans fatty acid and high saturated fatty acid can impede this conversion.
